back to school

dress: Club Monaco; pumps: COACH; bag: J. Crew; cuff: DANNIJO

OK, you caught me…I’m not heading back to school today but back to work (bleh) but when I was a kid, the Tuesday after Labor Day was a sartorially imperative day. Heading back to class, it was essential to look cool (like you had matured over the summer and had, like, real life experiences- ya know?) but too much apparent effort and you were dead in the water. In fourth grade this meant wearing a new sweatshirt with an imprint of a necklace. I thought it was the cat’s pajamas but a few hours in a sun-soaked classroom and I began to regret my long-sleeved choice. From then on I also considered the balmy temperatures in my back to school approach.

Nowadays weather-appropriate, casually chic clothes are my M.O. for most outings. Today I decided to start Fall off on the right foot with a dress that is channeling both this season’s reddish mauve color du jour and also the fit-and-flare silhouette that was such a feature in Alexander McQueen’s Autumn offerings. Now, you know I have a firmly held belief about fit-and-flare dresses: namely that they are made for twirling…

Did you expect anything less? Happy Tuesday!

  1. This dress is so beautiful and the colors are really perfect for fall! I also started fall with wearing my favorite colors – mustard yellow, camel, brown, bordeaux and green – I’m really looking forward to these cold fall mornings with sun in the afternoon!
And yes, I know what you are writing about, I also was like this when I was a child and still in school!

    • Hi Anita,
Thanks so much for stopping by! I too am really looking forward to delving into Fall’s rich tones…if only the mild temperatures would stick around it would be the best of both worlds!

  2. Oh my Goodness! The dress is adorable – perfect for autumn and going back to school looking amazing! I live in England so its compulsory to wear uniform and jewellry is not allowed so out first day of school is a chore knowing that we can’t what we want anymore! And the shoes are amazing! I am loving this post!

    • Thanks so much for your comment! It’s great to hear a different point of view. I hadn’t even considered the sartorial implications for someone required to wear a uniform. I had the blessing and curse to never attend a school that required one…it certainly would have made life a little simpler but I’m very glad I had the creative freedom to wear what I liked.

      • I suppose wearing a uniform does make life a little easier but it has allowed us to be expressive in other kids of ways including hair and makeup. We are always experimenting with hairstyles in order to get over the fact that we can’t wear what we want! But thank you for replying to my comment! It’s nice to know a blog who reads everyone’s opinions!
