colorblocking for summer’s end

dress: Club Monaco; shoes: Stuart Weitzman; bag: Rebecca Minkoff; necklace: TopShop; watch: anthropologie

I returned from San Francisco this weekend to find my neighborhood overtaken by NYU as they welcome a new class of freshmen. The sight of nervous families looking simultaneously bewildered and irritated while unloading suitcase upon suitcase of their student’s belongings is a clear sign that fall is right around the corner.

This time of year I’m torn between wanting to savor summer in all its floaty bare whiteness and wanting to dive into autumn with its allure of structure and polish. My solution was to take a dress that’s graphically sharp with its colorblocked panels and bust out a bare leg to honor the dwindling days of summer that remain. (The heels are a souvenir from San Francisco- they were spotted in Saks and the rich suede seemed so perfect for this coming season… the rest is history.)

With only one week left, are you clinging to summer in your flip flops or are you already going full autumn with tights?

    • Fall is an amazing fashion season so it’s hard not to get swept up but on my flight there was an astrologist who was saying this is going to be a very bad winter, my toes heard this and clamored for a few more days of freedom in sandals!

      • Haha that’s awesome. Speaking of cold toes, that means I need to start searching for boots! I have the hard time finding boots that fit my calves. There goes my September clothing budget!

      • Boots can be tough. The worst is when you’re trying them on in the shop and you manage to get into them ok but then when it comes to take them off, the boots turn into a chinese finger trap- the harder you pull, the tighter they stay on. I have occasionally had to ask for assistance- shopping fail!

      • Haha I’ve only found 2 pairs of knee high boots in my life that comfortably fit my calves… curse of the muscle-y legs continues… which means I have to start early and be prepared to spend money. However, I usually wear them for a few years so I figure it’s money well spent. Also, finding a good shoe-repair guy is vital.

    • It’s so true. Spring and Autumn are such wonderful seasons but they seem to flash by. I have been known to try and hold onto Fall through November by avoiding coats and sticking to jackets. We’ll see how far I get!

  1. Fantastic dress! I have a very summery pastel pleated colorblock dress. I’d like to find one that would work year-round (like this one). I love tights, but I’m very particular about when it’s cool enough to wear them. I secretly judge people wearing hose or tights when it’s above 70 degrees (I play it extra safe and only wear tights if the high temp is under 60. It’s my own made-up rule but I stick to it!

    • Seeing someone in tights on an 80+ day just makes me start sweating- I put it in a similar class as those ladies who wear fur in August. I think your rule is a good one and with any luck, it’ll mean we postpone tights to October!
